Export authorisation
An IEC issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade is required to export goods from India. It is quoted on the shipping bill and on export documentation.
Customs
Export consignments are declared to Indian Customs through an electronic shipping bill filed on ICEGATE. The declared description, quantity, HS classification and value must match the commercial invoice and packing list.
Tax
Exports of goods are treated as zero-rated supplies under Section 16 of the IGST Act, 2017. Where the exporter ships under a Letter of Undertaking, no IGST is charged on the export invoice.
Agriculture & food
Exporters of scheduled agricultural and processed food products register with APEDA, which also issues the Registration-cum-Membership Certificate used for several product categories.

Food businesses in India, including exporters of food products, operate under a licence or registration issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Plant and plant-product consignments generally require a phytosanitary certificate issued by India's National Plant Protection Organization, confirming the consignment meets the importing country's plant-health requirements.

Exporters of spices and spice products from India register with the Spices Board, which also operates quality-evaluation and certification schemes for spice exports.
Packaging
Solid wood packaging, including pallets and crates, must be treated and marked to the ISPM 15 standard for most destinations. Confirm the destination's requirement before the consignment is packed.
Documentation
A certificate of origin evidences where the goods were produced. Preferential certificates issued under a trade agreement are applied for through the Government of India's common digital platform.
Destination controls
Labelling, contaminant limits, registration of the importer and prior-notice filings are set by the importing country, not by India. These are confirmed per product and destination before an order is confirmed, and the importer of record is responsible for import-side filings.
